2007 DHARMA STUDY PROGRAM

Starting in early 2007, the long term Dharma study program will be based on the main texts traditionally studied in the Tibetan Monastic tradition such as the Pramanavartika, the Prajnaparamita litrature,
Abhisamayalamkara, Madhyamakavatara, Abhidharmakosha and the Vinaya.

Students will be able to participate on a long term basis or for short term blocks of two to three months. The main teachings will be given by the resident Geshe while guest lamas will be invited to teach auxiliary
subjects such as Buddhist history, Drup ta (Tenets and Lo rig (Mind and Mental Factors)

1. Pramanavartika: “Valid Cognition” --Includes teachings on the mind and its functions and is     fundamental to the following subjects.

2. Prajnaparamita: “Perfection of Wisdom Sutras”-- Teachings on Hearer, Solitary Realiser and     Bodhisattva vehicles. The main text is the Abhisamayalamkara “Ornament of Clear Realisation,” by     Maitreya.

3. Madhyamakavatara: “Supplement to the Middle Way,” by Chandrakirti. Expounds the profound view of     emptiness according to the Prasangika Madhyamika tenet school.

4. Abhidharmakosha : “Treasury of Knowledge”, by Vasubandhu. A detailed presentation of Buddhist    Abhidharma-the* *systematic philosophy and cosmology of Buddhism.

5. Vinaya: Rules of conduct and monastic discipline (open only to ordained sangha)

Thösamling is a ‘Rime’ (non-sectarian) nunnery and as such we plan to adapt these subjects to the needs of students from the different Tibetan traditions. In order to do so, we will invite Lamas of the four
different schools of Tibetan Buddhism to give teachings on subjects unique to their lineages.

Classes will run five days a week and will be open to nunnery residents and non-residents alike. A monthly course fee of approximately Rs.1,500 may be requested. This price will be discounted for monks and nuns.

More information about the program details and registration will be available shortly.
