Nuns fund, why is it so important?

During an audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in August 2007 he stressed very much that all the Sangha who studies in Thosamling Institute should stay for free and have free education. Nuns and monks who get ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama should not return totheir daily jobs which they had in their countries but stay in a monastery or nunnery for at least 4 years to get proper education.

We explained to His Holiness that Thosamling Institute is not able to take care of all the nuns who live and study in Thosamling to let them stay for free. Supporting Western monks and nuns is something whichis not common in our western society and only a few can manage to get enough sponsorship together for their living here in India.

In eastern countries like Thailand, Birma, Sri Lanka Taiwan, Korea etc. there is a strong tradition to support the monastics in many ways. It is part of their culture to spend part of your salary to support monastics. In Western countries this tradition is not known so well.

In the West where Buddhism is florishing it is important to invest in their Western Sangha.. After receiving proper education in monasteries and nunneries in India they will be able to support Buddhism in their native countries and can train new Buddhist in a proper way.

Daily life sponsorship:
To support a Western Buddhist Nun in Thosamling in her education and living we need 80 Euro a month. As this amount is quite high for many people we suggest to donate half of this and with 40 Euro a month you can at least sponsor six months of a nuns living and education.

Education
You can also sponsor the course fees for a nun for the Tibetan Language course A donation of
US$500/ 350 Euro would fund an entire year of language study for one nun. (can be paid in portions throughout the year)

A One Time Donation:
A one time donation of any amount would be gratefully received and added to the existing study fund.
