The next Tibetan language course will commence at the
30th of January 2009.
Registration for this course will open during Juli 2008.
There will be a short break for Losar ( Tibetan New Year)
and during the Monlam teachings
from 11th to the 21st of March 2009.
The purpose of this course is to get a good basis of
Tibetan language, to be able to speak Tibetan fluently
and read Buddhist texts in the future. We will practice
colloquial language in order to communicate directly with
our teachers and Dharma vocabulary/literature to enable
us to follow the texts and prayers in Tibetan.
This language program has been organized primarily for
the nuns of Thösamling, but monks and lay persons
are also welcome to attend. However, they will need to
secure lodging outside of the nunnery, there are rooms
available in the nearby village.
English required: In order to facilitate the progress
of individuals and the group, students must have a good
understanding of English so that they are able to understand
the explanations of the colloquial Tibetan and Dharma
is given in English.
Commitment
We ask for a one year commitment to enter the program.
Each term of six to eight weeks will be followed by a
one week break to allow time to really "digest"
all the material from the class. There will also be a
one month holiday break during the Monsoon, the timing
of which depends upon the schedule of the teachings of
His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Commitment to Class:
We understand that each student may have their own lineage,
teacher, and specific commitments from that teacher, but
we request that students consider this program as their
main practice for this short time in life and reduce other
Dharma activities. The purpose of this request is to create
an environment where students will be able to focus on
learning the Tibetan language thoroughly, a strong motivation
to achieve this goal should help avoid absenteeism during
the study period. In the case of absence it is the student's
responsibility to find out what information was missed
during the previous class.
Tests and exams will occur at regular intervals. They
are mandatory, with the intention to assess the students
progress. However, a competitive atmosphere will not be
encouraged. At the end of the first year we will conduct
an evaluation with the entire class, after which a second
year might be organized depending on the outcome of this
evaluation.
Class Focus and Structure:
YEAR ONE
Subject Focus and Class Structure:
During the first two terms the class will focus on colloquial
Tibetan language. From the third term on we will introduce
basic literature/Dharma.
1) Colloquial Language: We will start with basic colloquial
language and then introduce "honorific language"
(to communicate with visiting teachers).
2) Dharma Literature: We will begin with basic Dharma
vocabulary such as refuge etc. and general sutra teachings
such as Lamrim and Ngondro. The text to study will be
chosen by the teacher.
YEAR TWO
Subject Focus and Class Structure :
1) Spoken Dharma: We will work with the CD's of His Holiness
the Dalai Lama's teaching on the Middle length Lam Rim
given during the monsoon teachings in July 2005 in Dharamsala.
Three half days per week will be spent studying this teaching
using written material, tapes and discussions, etc with
the main teacher.
2) Written Literature: Written Literature: grammar and
traditional texts will also be studied. ( material to
be chosen by the teacher).
3) Colloquial practice: Conversation classes approximately
three times a week.
This program is not definitive and may be modified by
the teacher, depending on the need of the students.
Daily Schedule (First Year)
Morning; Two Hours: Formal Language instruction; a Tibetan
teacher will lead the course.
Afternoon; Two Hours: The conversational Tibetan and review
class will focus on conversing with a Tibetan conversation
partner. Its purpose is to put into practice the material
given in the morning class.
Each Tibetan partner will assist two students only. The
conversation class is not obligatory (but no reduction
in fees will be given if the student decides not to attend).
Lunch is served between the morning and afternoon classes.
It is not obligatory but all students are welcome to participate
however, the price is not included in the course fees.
Course Fees
First Year Course:
one month : 4,800 Rupees.(US$120) x10 months
Payment options :
a) 4.800 rupees directly at the time of registration.
b) 43.200 rupees at the start of the course.
Course fees should be paid in advance for the whole year.
c) Nuns and monks may receive at least 50% discount or
depending on the 'Monastic Study-Fund's' financial situation
we hope to give a 100% discount.
Please contact the office for more information. No refund
of the deposit will be made if the student decides to
cancel their participation. No registration will be confirmed
without deposit. The deposit will go towards the total
annual fee.
Second Year Course
One month : 2.400 Rupees.(US$50) Nuns and monks may receive
a at least 50% discount or depending on the 'Monastic
Study-Fund's' financial situation we hope to give a 100%
discount.

Refund and Cancellation Policy:
100% refund only offered in the case of cancellation of
the course by Thösamling Institute or the delay of
the commencement of the course resulting in your inability
to attend. There will be no refund of the money paid at
registration if the student decides to leave the program
before the end of the course.
